Two prison guards were killed in an ambush near Rouen, a city in the north of France, not far from Paris, when a van carrying a prisoner was ambushed.

The prisoner and the attackers escaped, according to French media.

Three guards were seriously injured, said Eric Dupont-Moretti, the French justice minister.

The attack happened on Tuesday morning, near the toll booth on the A154 highway, during the prisoner's return from a court hearing to the prison in the town of Evre.

It involved several people from two vehicles that approached the prison convoy, reports AFP.

The vehicle in which the prisoner and the attackers escaped was later set on fire, according to unconfirmed French media reports.

Photos published on social networks, which are also used by some French media, show what appear to be armed men in hoods approaching the convoy.

The BBC has not established the authenticity of the footage.

A huge search is underway in France.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the attack was a "shock for all of us".

"Everything is being done to find the perpetrators of this crime so that justice can be served in the name of the French people," he wrote on the X social network.

Interior Minister Žeral Darmanen points out that the authorities "use all available means to find criminals".

"According to my instructions, several hundred policemen and gendarmes were mobilized," said Darmanen.
