US national team footballer Folarin Balogan said it was an incredible feeling to score two goals at the World Cup, in today's victory against Paraguay.
The US national football team defeated Paraguay 4-1 in Inglewood, in the first round match of Group D at the World Cup, with Balogan scoring goals in the 31st minute and in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.
"I imagined what it would be like to score a goal at the World Cup, but the reality surpassed that. This is a dream night," Balogan said after the game.
Balogan could choose which national team he would play for. He was born in New York, but moved to England as a one-month-old baby with a family of Nigerian descent and grew up in London.
He went through Arsenal's football academy and has also played for the US and England youth teams. The Monaco player has committed to playing for the US in 2023.
"When I made the commitment and throughout the whole cycle, throughout the journey to this point, I always said that the fans gave me so much motivation and support. The most important thing for me was always to be able to repay them and I think today was a great opportunity. I want to continue to show the fans that I made the right decision," he stated.
Numerous family members were at the stadium today.
"I could see them in the stands, but it was difficult because many of the fans were dressed in red and white. I had to make sure to get a lot of tickets, but I was glad to do it because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I want everyone to experience it," said the 24-year-old striker.
He was asked how he felt after the game.
"I didn't manage to absorb it all. I'm sure that when I get back to the hotel and rest, I'll be able to feel how incredible this night was," Balogan said.
When asked how he would celebrate, he replied: "I think I'll probably just watch Netflix."
His teammate on the national team, Christian Pulisic, said the team is happy to have Balogan on the team.
"The kid is crazy. He's deadly in front of goal. Let's hope he keeps it up. Everyone will watch the goals, but the way he fights these defenders, keeps the ball, forces fouls, I really like it," Pulisic said.
