There has been all sorts of information in recent months about whether Iran will even participate in the World Cup due to the political situation and conflict with the Americans.
In the end, I guess sport won out, the Iranians are here, but under special conditions. So the national team is based in Mexico (Tijuana), and plays matches in the United States of America. Admittedly, close to the Mexico-USA border.
The "Desert Foxes" are waiting for a flight from Tijuana to Los Angeles and the opening match of the World Cup against New Zealand.
Mehdi Taremi, the team's leading star, addressed the public on behalf of the Iranians:
- This is my third participation in the World Cup and I have always said that when you step on the soil of the host country - you should feel warmth and a sense of community. Maybe it's just my impression, but I don't feel it here right now - said Taremi.
He talked about sports and politics.
- Obviously there are a lot of tensions, but I think sports and politics should always be separated. The World Cup can make all the conflicts in the world disappear - emphasized the former Inter and Porto striker.
On the field - Iran wants three points.
- We need to think about football and make that our only occupation - added Taremi.
The Iran-New Zealand match is at 3:00 AM on the night between Monday and Tuesday.
- We can't wait for the game to start - said New Zealand striker Chris Wood, Nottingham Forest's top scorer.
