Al-Arab's own goal and Marko Arnautović crushed the dreams of brave Jordan, Austria had waited 36 years for this moment

36 years ago, the Austrian national football team defeated the United States (2:1) at the World Cup in Florence. It was the last match of this European team in Italy in 1990, and also, until this morning, their last victory at the World Cup.

And then this morning in Santa Clara, in front of a little over 68 spectators, Austria achieved its first triumph at the World Cup, since the aforementioned duel with the Americans. Ralf Ragnik's team defeated debutants Jordan 3:1 in the first round of Group I.

Between these two victories, Austria only participated in the 1998 World Cup in France, where they won two points in a group with Italy, Chile and Cameroon. They returned to the tournament after 28 years, and the victory over Jordan was much more difficult than expected.

Austria had more possession at the start, tried to establish control, but Jordan had the first chance - Al-Fahuri started a counterattack, shot from more than 20 meters, but Schlager saved.

And then in the 21st minute, Austria took the lead - Schlager sent the ball to Schmid, the Jordan players were far from the Werder player, who fired from about twenty meters and scored a beautiful goal, one of the most beautiful at this year's World Cup.

Two minutes later, Jordan could have equalized, after a corner and a short combination, Ali Olvan headed the ball, but it hit the crossbar. Then, at the end of the first half, Olvan entered the penalty area from the right, shot, but Šlager saved. The ball then bounced to Tamari, who was blocked. Tamari had another chance at the end of the first half, but the Rennes player had a poor finish.

Jordan made a great impression in the first half, and they managed to equalize in the 50th minute. Schlager lost the ball, Jordan started a counterattack, Al-Rawabdeh passed to Olwan, who ran towards the goal from the center, entered the penalty area and scored. It was a historic moment and Jordan's first goal at the World Cup.

Austria looked nervous at the time, but coach Rangnick made the substitutions, so there were no surprises. In the 67th minute, the European team scored a goal, after a cross from Sabicer, Arnautović headed the ball into the net, but the goal was disallowed because Poš played with his hand while passing the ball to Arnautović.

However, in the 76th minute everything was regular, and the situation was similar to the one with the disallowed goal - Sabicer crossed from a corner, Arnautović tried to hook the ball, but he failed, and the ball hit Al-Arabiya and ended up in the net.

Marko Arnautović played an excellent game, coming on in the second half and expected to be in the starting lineup for the next match. The Red Star player first forced a penalty in stoppage time, and then scored the final goal from the penalty spot.

Austria will play against Argentina in the next round on June 22nd (19:00), while Jordan will play against Algeria the day after (05:00).
