Colombian footballer has not returned home due to death threats

The Colombian national football team failed to repeat its greatest success at the World Cup and reach the quarterfinals again. In the round of 16 of this year's World Cup, they were stopped by Switzerland after a better penalty shootout.

However, everything could have been different if Haminton Kampas had taken advantage of the great chance he found himself in in the 114th minute. Granit Xhaka made a mistake, he was left alone in front of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, a midfielder for Rosario Central, but he scored the entire goal.

Campos did not even board the flight to Bogota with the rest of his teammates, and Argentine media reports that the reason lies in the fact that he received serious death threats due to a missed great chance that would have likely taken Colombia to the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

"My Colombia, please let us never lose respect for each other. We may think differently, feel frustration or sadness, but no passion justifies hatred or living in fear," Kampasa wrote, among other things, on social media.

Death threats to football players in Colombia are unfortunately nothing new. The most famous case is certainly the one in which Andres Escobar was murdered after the 1994 World Cup in the United States after scoring an own goal in a match against the hosts.
