The family of US President Joe Biden welcomed a new resident of the White House - a two-year-old cat named Willow.

The spokesman for the first lady of America, Jill Biden, said that the new housemate was named after her hometown - Willow Grove, Pennsylvania.

This is the first cat in the White House since the George W. Bush administration.

Willow will join Commander, Joe Biden's German shepherd.

On Friday morning, Jill Biden shared photos of a short-haired cat with green eyes on Twitter.

"Willow has settled into the White House with her favorite toys, treats and plenty of room to sniff and explore," her spokesman Michael La Rosa told The Associated Press.

Jill Biden met a new pet when her cat Willow joined her uninvited on stage in Pennsylvania at an event during her husband's 2020 campaign.

"Seeing their immediate connection, the owner of the farm knew immediately that the cat belonged to Dr. Biden," La Rosa added.

The White House has been without a cat since the death in 2009 of India, a black American shorthair who lived with George W. Bush's family for nearly two decades.

In addition to Willow and Commander, the Bidens previously had two other German shepherds in the White House - Major and Champion.

However, three-year-old Major was sent to live with Biden family friends in Delaware after two incidents.

The oldest presidential pet, Champion, died in June at the age of 13.

While dogs were more often residents of the White House, several presidents also kept cats, such as Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford.

Previously, the White House was inhabited by hamsters, raccoons and birds.

Only three American presidents - James Polk, Andrew Johnson and Donald Trump - did not keep pets while in office.
