Ultramarathoners are used to difficult conditions, sometimes sleeping in small tents, running through mud, and often competing at night.

They set themselves incredible challenges over long distances, and the landscapes they run in can be extremely inhospitable.

But now a great novelty is coming to this world - a luxury race that few can afford.

This luxury race includes butlers, hydrotherapy pools, speedboats and chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants.

Competition Highland Kings Ultra it lasts four days, and the distance that the participants have to cover is 193 kilometers on the west coast of Scotland.

The registration fee for participation per person is 18.200 euros.

For comparison, the registration fee for the race West Highland Way is 140 euros.

Organizers Highland Kings Ultra racing claims it's "the most luxurious long-distance experience on the planet."

Rebecca Silva, the race director, told the BBC that participants "run like warriors and recover like kings".

"That element of luxury differentiates this race from others - it is intended for professionals who can afford it, but also have an adventurous spirit and want to see luxury in the wilderness," said Silva.

Where the most expensive races in the world are organized?

  • The only race where participation is paid more than this one is the World Marathon Challenge - on seven continents. Participation costs about 40.000 euros, and includes accommodation and air transportation
  • The Last dessert a race that lasts 11 days in Antarctica - participation is about 11.000 euros, that price includes shipping from Argentina
  • The Antarctic Ice race - it is 100 kilometers long, and the registration fee is 16.000 euros. The price includes food, accommodation and air transportation from Chile
  • Marathon Des Sables - a seven-day race through the Sahara desert during which competitors carry all their equipment themselves. The race is 250 kilometers long, and participation costs 3.270 euros
  • The Atacama Crossing - a seven-day race with a length of 250 kilometers, and the registration fee is 3.200 euros

Silva says each of the 40 participants will receive personalized training plans to prepare for the race in April 2022.

"They will be subjected to sweat composition tests in university laboratories in the cities where they live, so they know what to feed their bodies," she explained.

They will have regular video conversations with psychologists and physiotherapists through the Zoom application.

"We will help them prepare in advance for the race - it will be a seven-month journey, the goal of which will be this world-unique race," she added.

Runners will have the opportunity to speak with Jonathan Albon, the ultramarathon champion, and will be advised by Anna Marie Waston, a former soldier, runner and coach.

The race starts in Dalnis and then the mountain marathon continues through the Glencoe area in western Scotland.

Then a part of the race goes through the forests, all the way to the Aran Islands.

The contestants will spend the night in a luxury camp, where they will attend a gala dinner with researcher Ranulph Fiennes.

The race is organized by the company Primal Adventures, which is run by former military special officer Matt Smith.

"In 2018, a group of French clients asked us to organize a luxury race from the Isle of Aran to Inverness - it was very successful and that's when the seed was sown that has sprouted today," explained Silva.

Ian Beattie, President of the Scottish Athletics Association and director of the second ultramarathon race, West Highland Way, says that he has never heard of such an expensive race.

"It will be interesting to see how many people are interested in this race.

There are also those who criticize the commercial side of these races, but in the end people will decide for themselves what they want," Biti said.

He explained that ultramarathon races organized by groups of experienced competitors are generally cheaper because a large number of volunteers participate.

"My advice is for people to join a local running club, because they have qualified trainers and people with a lot of experience."
