Thirteen women have accused actor Gerard Depardieu of sexual assault or harassment, according to a journalistic investigation by French media outlet Mediapart.

The women claim that the 74-year-old actor groped them, put his hands in their underwear and made obscene comments, the website says.

Allegedly, the incidents took place in the past two decades on the sets of films and television series, as well as in public places.

Depardieu's lawyer says he "formally denies all charges that could fall under criminal law".

An actor nominated for an Oscar and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) award, he is known for his roles in films, among other things. Jean de Floret, Zelena karta i Cyrano de Bergerac.

These are not the first accusations of sexual violence against Depardieu.

Two years ago, a criminal investigation was launched against him for rape, which he denied.

An extra on the set said the actor slipped his hand under her dress and tried to "get to her underwear," according to the investigations by Mediapart.

When she pushed his hand away, the extra claims he became aggressive and tried again.

Another woman described how the actor "grabbed her waist" during a break between takes, "moved his hand and finally put it on her bottom and didn't move her."

Another woman alleged that Depardieu tried to "put his hand on her genitals" during a crowd scene.

On another occasion, accompanied by a man he introduced as a producer, the actor allegedly grabbed her from behind and "rubbed her sides, stomach and breasts."

Many women told Mediapart that they were surprised that nothing was done on the film sets to prevent it, and that his alleged behavior was tolerated and sometimes laughed off.

"The adults let Depardieu touch my breasts in front of everyone," said one actress, who was 17 at the time.

On Wednesday, the prosecutor's office in Paris announced to the AFP news agency that "as of today, they have not received any new complaints".

Depardieu is still under investigation for allegedly raping an actress in 2018.
