Federal prosecutors plan to indict Hunter Biden, the 53-year-old son of US President Joseph Biden, at the end of the month, court records show.
A planned plea deal to resolve charges of tax evasion and illegal gun possession fell through in July, and it is not known what charges special prosecutor David Weiss is preparing against Hunter Biden.
This is the first time that the Ministry of Justice has charged the son of the current President of the United States.
The case against Hunter Biden has become a hot political issue as his father campaigns for re-election to the White House.

On Wednesday, the special prosecutor's office gave a deadline of September 29 for a new indictment in the status report requested by Judge Marilyn Norejka.
The court filing refers to the allegation that Hunter Biden, the eldest child of Joseph Biden, illegally possessed a firearm while taking drugs.
He was also under federal investigation for the business.
Representatives of Hunter Biden's legal team responded in a court filing that their client abides by the terms of the so-called agreement approved by the parole office, by which he is conditioned to stay out of trouble for two years.
His lawyer, Abe Lovell, said they expect a fair decision on the five-year investigation into Biden based on the evidence and the law, without political pressure.
At that hearing, he was charged with two lesser offenses - failing to pay more than $100.000 in taxes on more than $1,5 million in income in 2017 and 2018.
He was expected to plead guilty in July after reaching a deal with prosecutors who planned to propose a two-year suspended sentence.
However, the deal collapsed after Judge Marilyn Noreika, appointed by former President Donald Trump, expressed doubt about the plea deal and its terms, as well as another deal that would have allowed him to avoid criminal charges for gun possession.
Although Attorney General Weiss was Trump's nominee, Republicans objected to Attorney General Merrick Garland's designation as a special counsel to lead the investigation.
They stated that this prosecutor's role was to broker what they considered a "sweet" plea deal.
Republicans in Congress are considering an impeachment inquiry into the US president, alleging that he played a role in his son's foreign affairs.
Citing bank statements, the House Oversight Committee said the Biden family and its associates earned $20 million from oligarchs in Russia, Kazakhstan and Ukraine while Joseph Biden served as vice president in the Barack Obama administration from 2009-2017.
"If you look at all the information we've been able to gather so far, the next logical step is to initiate an impeachment," said Kevin McCarthy, the Speaker of the House.
