A man tried to smuggle more than 100 live snakes from Hong Kong into mainland China by stuffing them down his pants, customs officials say.

The unnamed passenger was stopped after passing through a "no report" gate at the crossing between semi-autonomous Hong Kong and the Chinese city of Shenzhen, officials said.

After the inspection, the customs officers found 104 snakes in "six bags" in his pants, according to the announcement of the Chinese customs.

"It was found that in each of them there were live snakes of various species, sizes and colors," it added.

In a video of Chinese customs officials are seen holding transparent plastic bags filled with live snakes - red, pink and white.

Mostly the snakes were small, but that's a huge number of reptiles for someone to wear in their pants.

Strict laws on biosecurity and disease control strictly prohibit people from bringing non-native animals into the country without a permit.

"Those who break the rules will be held responsible in accordance with the law," said customs, without specifying the penalty.

At the same crossing last year, a woman was stopped for trying to smuggle five snakes hidden in her bra.

China is one of the world's largest centers for animal trade, and the authorities have been waging a major fight against smuggling in recent years.
