Badminton has inadvertently gained new status in Hong Kong, thanks to the Bureau of Education.

Part of the teaching material, released last week, is a module entitled "Adolescents and intimate relationships - 3rd grade of high school", which suggests that those teenagers who want to have sex "play badminton together" instead.

The material also includes the form "I undertake" with the aim of young lovers confirming that they will have "self-discipline, self-control and resistance to pornography".

The document was met with criticism, but officials defended the decision.

Meanwhile, social networks were flooded with joking comments about "playing badminton".

"FWB (Friends with benefits) Combination - Badminton friends," read one of the comments on Instagram, which has more than a thousand reactions.

"In English: Netflix and enjoy. In Cantonese, play badminton together?", it was second on Facebook which has been shared more than 500 times.

Even Se Jing Suet, an Olympic badminton player, came forward.

"Everyone makes an appointment to play badminton. Does everyone really like to play it?" she asked on the Tred platform, adding a smiling emoji.

Hong Kong Education Bureau

Some people see a practical side to the whole situation.

MP Dorin Kong believes that the Bureau of Education does not understand young people with this document.

For her, the suggestion about badminton is unrealistic.

“How do they borrow a badminton racket on the spot if that happens?” she asked.

Thomas Tang, an amateur player of the sport, says that the jokes and the sudden interest in badminton have fueled the ridicule of players like him.

"It used to be a healthy sport, but now if you ask people to play it, they make a joke out of it," he said, adding that the irony was that badminton was actually a good way for guys to meet girls.

One of the aims of the module is to help students deal with sexual fantasies and impulses, but not to encourage them to have fun or have sex.

In the documents of the Institute of Education, there are also tips on how to dress decently to study, how to avoid provocative clothing and how to decisively refuse sex before marriage" if they are unable to cope with the "consequences of premarital sex".

Kristin Choi, the secretary of education, responded strongly to the criticism.

"We want to protect teenagers," she said in defense of the documents on Sunday, August 25, adding that sex with a minor is illegal.

She was supported by John Lee, the mayor, who said that while there are differing views on education, the government has a "leading role in determining the kind of society it wants to build".

But for Henry Chen, the father of a 13-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, these moves are laughable.

"The Hong Kong government is always off track. They make a fool of themselves.

"My wife and I will raise our children sexually on our own, it's not something where I would rely on schools and the government," said this father.
