All Eurostar train departures from Paris have been cancelled for the rest of the day after a World War II bomb was found near the Gare du Nord station.

The bomb was found in the middle of the tracks in the Saint-Denis area during nighttime work, the national railway company SNCF reported.

Local train services have also been cancelled.

All traffic to the train station was stopped as police worked to deactivate the device.

Gare du Nord station is located in the north of the French capital and is the busiest railway hub in the country.

Many passengers are waiting for buses to Charles de Gaulle Airport.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said traffic would be "significantly disrupted" throughout the day, AFP reported.

In the latest update, the Eurostar app says the company "sincerely apologizes for the traffic changes and understands the inconvenience this may cause."

"We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation at this time," the statement added.

This is not the first time that the discovery of a war bomb has paralyzed rail traffic in the French capital.

The discovery of such a bomb in 2019 disrupted traffic between Saint-Lazare station and the western suburbs of Paris.

Unexploded ordnance is still found across Europe, especially in Germany, and bombs are regularly discovered on construction sites, 80 years after World War II.

In August 2023, around 13.000 people were told to temporarily evacuate their homes in Düsseldorf in western Germany after a one-ton bomb made in the United States was found.

Gar du Nord is one of the busiest train stations in Europe, carrying more than 226 million passengers in 2023, according to SNCF.
