King Charles III will release his own playlist of songs that lift his spirits and remind him of important memories, including tracks by Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue and Grace Jones.

In the photograph accompanying this musical project called the "Royal Music Room", the king is sitting at a table with the sign "is itr" at Buckingham Palace.

In the video announcement for this project, which celebrates music from Commonwealth countries, the band plays Bob Marley's song "Could you be loved".

"This is what I especially wanted to share - the songs that brought me joy," the king said.

"Throughout my life, music has meant a lot to me," the king says in the video, which announces the project created in partnership with Apple Music.

"I know this is the case with many others as well.

"Music has the extraordinary power to bring back happy memories from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in moments of sadness, and to take us to distant places."

"But perhaps, above all, it can lift our spirits, especially when it unites us in celebration."

"In other words, it brings us joy."

The full selection of poems, with more royal commentary, will be released on Monday, for Commonwealth Day.

In addition to reggae by Bob Marley and dance music by Kylie Minogue, music by Nigerian-American singer-songwriter Davido and British singer-songwriter Rae is expected to be released.

Marley's message

The project aims to take a different approach to Commonwealth Day, when the royal family gathers for a service at Westminster Abbey.

The playlist will showcase the king's musical interests, from the 1930s to Afrobeat stars.

He is also expected to share anecdotes about some of the artists and reveal why the songs help form the audio record of his life.

"This seemed like a very interesting and innovative way to celebrate this year's Commonwealth Day," the king said.

The king previously visited Bob Marley's former home in Jamaica, which has been converted into a museum.

And outside the palace windows, a band played Marley's message: "Don't let them change you! Or even remake you! Oh, no!"
