China's largest hot soup chain, Heidilao, has offered compensation to more than 4.000 customers who experienced inconvenience when visiting one of its branches in Shanghai.

Namely, while many guests were having dinner, two teenagers urinated in the soup.

A video of boys urinating into a pot full of broth (a soup with meat, vegetables or fish) while having dinner in a separate room has been widely shared on social media.

It is not clear who filmed them.

Police said the 17-year-olds, who were drunk at the time, were taken into custody shortly after the incident.

There is currently no information on whether anyone later consumed the soup in which the teenagers urinated.

Hejdilao apologized to customers, saying that all eating and cooking equipment had been replaced, and that they had disinfected all other dishes and utensils.

The incident was recorded in February, but the company's management only learned about the case a few days later when footage appeared on social media.

The company says that the staff working at the time were unable to stop the teenagers from urinating in the soup.

The exact location of the incident was only revealed a week later, the company said, as they have dozens of restaurants in the city.

Hejdilao chain restaurants use their own equipment to prepare food - hot pots, and soups are not served to other customers.

It is currently unknown whether the pot in question was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before being used by the next customer.

"We fully understand that we cannot compensate our customers for the inconvenience this incident has caused, but we will do everything we can to take responsibility," the company said.

They also confirmed that customers who dined at the restaurant between February 24 and March 8 will be refunded their full amount.

They will also receive financial compensation, ten times the amount they were charged.

Since opening its first restaurant in Jiangyang, Sichuan Province, the company has expanded rapidly and now has more than 1.000 restaurants worldwide.

Hejdilao is known for its customer service and family atmosphere, where ladies can get manicures and children get sweets while they wait.
