A man escaped from a French prison by hiding in the luggage of another man, who was released after serving his sentence, officials told local media.
The administration of the penal unit in the Lyon-Corbas region in southeastern France has launched an investigation, BFMTV reports.
The prisoner "took advantage of the release of another convict to hide in his bag and get out," the prison's penal institution told Agence France-Presse.
The fugitive has been convicted of several offenses and is also under investigation for involvement in organized crime, local media reported.
They add that an investigation has now been launched due to the possibility that "the escape is part of an organized gang plan and criminal conspiracy."
Last month, the Lyon Prison Association issued a warning about overcrowding in the Lyon-Corbas prison.
Around 1.200 people were serving sentences at the facility as of May 1 this year, although it has the capacity to accommodate 678 convicts, according to BFMTV.
