In a long personal essay, Allen recalled his first meeting with Keaton in 1969 during rehearsals for his play Play It Again Sam.

The director made eight films with the famous actress, including Annie Hall, for which Keaton won an Oscar in 1977.

At one point, Keaton and Allen were in a romantic relationship in real life.

Recalling their first meeting, Allen writes that he thought, "If Huckleberry Finn were a beautiful young woman, he would be Keaton."

The world is a "gloomier" place without her, he added.

"Still, her films exist. Her laughter still echoes in my head."

Keaton also starred in other Allen films - Manhattan, A vampiric Miles, Radio days.
