The woman who raped and murdered 12-year-old Lola Davier in Paris has been sentenced to life in prison, a rare case in French justice.
This is the outcome of a court case that shocked France, with the trial chamber and jury imposing the maximum sentence on 27-year-old Dahbia Benkired, who will spend at least 30 years in prison.
Benkired is the first woman in the history of French justice to be sentenced to this punishment, which has rarely been applied to men.
It was awarded to serial killer and rapist Michel Fournier and jihadist Salah Abdeslam, who participated in the 2015 terrorist attack in Paris, in which 130 people were killed.
Lola was murdered in October 2022, and her body was found in a trunk not far from her home in the northeastern area of Paris.
Benkired is a migrant from Algeria, who had previously been served with a decision requiring her to leave France.
Right-wing and far-right politicians have highlighted this case as a negative example of immigration.
Lola's mother, Delphine Davier, and her brother Thibaut attended the sentencing in Paris.
Her father, Johan Davier, died in 2024 at the age of 50.
The prosecution demanded the harshest sentence for Benkired, who was also examined by psychiatrists, who determined that she had "psychopathic" traits, but was otherwise healthy.
"Don't misunderstand that drug therapy can radically change Miss Benkired's personality."
"If there is no disease, there is no cure," the prosecutor's office said.
Before the jury's decision on Friday, Benkired said:
"I beg your forgiveness, what I did was terrible."
"That's all I have to say."
