In the village of Vevčani, in the far west of North Macedonia, a traditional festival was held, one of the most famous in the Balkans, when almost all the locals wear masks.
The custom is believed to be over 1.400 years old and is based on ancient pagan beliefs.
Carnival honors Saint Basil the Great, and is held every year on January 13th and 14th, the day of the celebration of the first day of the New Year, according to the Julian calendar.
People in Vevcani believe that their masks expel evil spirits from their lives.
Carnival participants are known as Vasiličari.
