A powerful cyclone from northern Africa, accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong gusts of wind, affected a belt from Tunisia, Malta, across southern Italy to the Balearic Islands and eastern Spain.
Wind gusts of up to 120 kilometers per hour have been recorded.
A powerful storm called Hari caused major problems in parts of the Mediterranean, especially in Sicily.
Nearly 200 people were evacuated from coastal towns across Sicily.
Evacuations were ordered in Giampiliera Marina (Messina), Capo Mulini and Santa Maria La Scala in Acireale, Riposto and Marcamemi and Granelli in Pacino.
Schools have been closed in about 150 municipalities, and more than 6.000 emergency workers are on the ground.
