One of the many questions after the release of millions of documents in the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein was: 'When exactly was his death recorded?'
Many people noticed that the official documents of the US Department of Justice recorded the date: August 9, 2019, which is the day before he died.
According to the official version, Epstein killed himself in a New York prison cell, awaiting trial for pimping minors for sex and sexual exploitation.
The US Department of Justice told the BBC's fact-finding team that the wrong date was put on Epstein's death certificate due to an "accidental typo".
According to the record, Epstein was “found unconscious in his cell” at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City “on Friday, August 9, 2019.”
But the published report by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Epstein's death, as well as an autopsy, an internal prison document and a photograph, stated that he was found dead on Saturday, August 10, 2019.
“Official statements regarding the death of Jeffrey Epstein were edited and distributed via several email chains within the Southern District of New York beginning on August 10, 2019.
"Although initial drafts of the statement listed the date as August 9, 2019, this was merely an unfortunate typo that was later updated to reflect the correct date before it was published."
"Any suggestion that the department drafted a statement prior to Jeffrey Epstein's death is false," the US Department of Justice told the BBC.
