The future in regression

In recent months, there has been repeated talk in the public space about the deterioration of the quality of life of young people, which is the reason for the increased number of suicides and psychological problems among this population of BiH. What is particularly worrying is the fact that we as a society deal with these issues, more precisely, the problems that young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina face, almost exclusively in those situations when the most unwanted cases occur: suicides or other forms of violence against the integrity of life.

The pressure of hopelessness

When we are moved out of our lethargy by such a case, the media contact psychologists and sociologists, the already known state of affairs, shortcomings and limitations are noted, so that after that the public's focus is directed once again to the current tapeworms of socio-political reality, and the burning problems of young people's lives they are again pushed to the margins of interest. That is, until some drastic case happens again and again, which briefly alarms the public.

The absence of a real desire to deal with the essential and pressing problems of those residents who should represent the strength and new freshness of this country at the level of the entire society leads us year after year to losses and the thinning of the membrane and the projected future that should move the country towards the better. From all those declarative stories that young people are fundamentally the most important force of this society, there remains essentially only a void that cannot be filled in any way, because the fact is that young people in BiH do not have their place, they have no reason to believe in a life worthy of a human being or they are given space to realize themselves outside of the concrete framework imposed on them by the very fact that they were born and exist where they are.

Findings about alienation, the source of which are computers, games and the Internet, are certainly global issues that our civilization is facing. However, reducing the problem only to that level in our case does not answer the state of affairs in reality. A young man in this country is restrained and limited in many ways, if he does not want to agree to the ruling paradigms and customs, he is brought before a wall that cannot be crossed. Everything is directed against him, the ethno-nationalist patterns that still dominantly determine life are in effect, existential impossibility and limitation dominantly determine the quality of life and the possibilities of choice. Any young man who does not want to agree to alienation and determination by national key is already ostracized and left on the winds of insecurity. The absence of any alternative, the possibility of realization outside the established framework, leads a young man either to a permanent state of lethargy or to an effort to leave an environment that does not offer any possibility of a different existence. On that scale of narrowed choices, drastic decisions are made under the pressure of hopelessness, because in situations where the exit is closed from all sides, the human being loses the ability to see the meaning and purpose of his own existence.

Abandoned and unprotected

Another election cycle has passed, and its results, when viewed from the perspective of young people, are once again depressing, unpromising and foreshadow another four years of tapeworm government based on the model we have known for years. The fact that no party in power or outside it seriously deals with the issue of departures, but above all the issue of the overall condition and quality of life of the population, which should represent the strength and future of this society, clearly tells us that a strategy that would deal with young people, that would offer a new paradigm of the meaning of existence in this country is missing, and is not considered a priority. As much as the mouths of those in power are full of stories about young people when they need it, things on the ground, in everyday existential reality, tell us that young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina are abandoned, unprotected and exposed to the negative stimuli of social regression. From the end of the war until today, we have lost an abundance of potential by leaving it uncared for, abandoned and left to fend for itself. In order for a society to be truly vital, ready for the present and the future, it must inevitably cultivate, protect and provide opportunities for the future to really come and be suitable for a young man who dreams and wants to achieve more within the framework of the space that belongs to him.
