A situation in which they seem to break away, and we seem to not give them, is an ideal matrix for feelings of discomfort and intimidation

It is clear, to anyone who wants to see, that the tents at the fair of Bosnian politics have long since been pitched and that we have reached another of the many finals of the ethno-political showdown. When I say "another one of many finals", then first of all I mean that here in the 28 years of the Dayton peace and post-peace, nothing else actually happens except repeated national battles that are presented to us in public and interpreted as fateful events that, well, bring this country into despair once more. As if hopelessness is not a category that we have been living with, wrestling with and coping with for a long time, trying to find any meaning of our existence on this piece of land. But the meaning, it seems, is not visible.

And that is quite an obvious consequence of the multi-year engineering of following ethno-national fears, which is carried out systematically here, essentially leaving not the least space to finally realize some healthy foundation on which this society could exist. What has been happening in the last few weeks, all the tension, beatings, threats and blackmail, can seem to someone as something really extraordinary and dangerous, like a threatening arrow that will destroy us. A situation in which they seem to break away, and we seem to not give them, is an ideal matrix for feelings of discomfort and intimidation. We have been trapped in that limbo for decades. Everything we do takes place under that cover. Pumping colorful lies about the possibility of dissolution or wet dreams of remaking Daytona keeps us zombies unable to conceptualize our existence within the confines of reason. Constantly, with clear intentions, it aims only in that direction, so that under the false explosions of the disintegration of the state, the last big parts will be realized, all our resources will be completely colonized, and our position of living in a society without order and values will be sealed.

Everything that has been happening for years, all the borderless games that are organized, chants and shouts, shows the depth of our powerlessness and the fact that in the imperial neo-bloc divisions of the world, we cannot even imagine our position. As eternal outsiders, we strive to be noticed by some of the great powers, we jump, scream, wave, indicate that we are here, that we have problems, that we are threatened by each other. In that general cacophony of announcements, ethnic performances, blockades, bans, the passing of half-laws, bringing charges, threatening arrests and other similar maneuvers undertaken by party vultures, all sense of reality is lost. We intensely live a parallel reality, we are cemented in mythomaniac narratives and their tentacles in everyday life. Along with those wagons of the past, which drags behind us like an unwanted third hand, which disturbs, entangles threads, limits the reach and possibilities to tackle the real problems and challenges that our civilization carries, we as a society are completely unrealistic in our attitudes to someone really takes care of us. In other words, the fact that someone will put out our fires, save us from our stupidity, from our divisions and squeamishness, are the wet dreams of small despots.

In the movement of the New Cold War glaciers, we are an insignificant point, an island that floats completely unprotected, unable to organize itself and establish any kind of autonomy. As long as our eyes are fixed on the help of the white world, on complete dependence on those who do not notice us, and the internal state is an orchestrated parade of nationalist kitsch and tomato-assassination, here misfortune will be the dominant category of duration. This does not mean that we will ever be able to achieve some real sovereignty, in a world that inherits the colonial tradition, but it seems that we could, if there is still room to create a framework for a society that will finally be based on development, on creation, on ideas and processes that leave the opportunity for life to be truly possible for someone here after us. If many generations are already late, does that mean that we are absolutely not interested in what will remain for those who come? Maybe there won't be any at all, or we'll forever remain an anthropological case study of the downfall of a community that, despite all the resources and opportunities, could never rise from the blight and blood, from the tyranny and narcissism of small differences.
