The metropolis of Montenegrin tourism, Budva, has a green "oasis" in the city center, which is an example of climate-smart urban planning (CSUD) in accordance with the goals of sustainable development. It is called the "Slovenian beach tourist resort", and it was set as a model for architectural and construction standards in highly seismically active zones, right after the devastating earthquake that severely damaged the Montenegrin coast in 1979.
For more than 40 years, "Slovenska plaža" has been a beautiful green summer resort, known for its small low-rise buildings, which have been in great demand by various international tourists since its foundation. Recently, due to the strong expansion of construction in Budva and Montenegro in general, there are many investors who prefer to see high-rise residential and hotel buildings instead of such a green resort, clearly due to the high profitability of the location. That is why it is important to keep the "Slovenian Beach" protected because future generations of tourists and residents should enjoy this climate-resistant summer resort, close to the beach, but also isolated from the crowds and noise, which are often associated with tourist demand in the high season.
The current management board, as stated in the local newspaper "Vijesti" on August 20, 8, promised that "Slovenska plaža naselje", which has been state-owned since its foundation in 2024, will retain its current status and will not be subject to future privatization. . We will see if this promise will be kept, because it is important that the current CSUD projects are protected and improved with new similar projects, which are in line with sustainable tourism, which is highlighted as a strategic vision in the current strategies of Montenegrin tourism. Also, let's remind, Montenegro, as a self-proclaimed ecological state (since 1984), is obliged to its population to nurture these projects and build more similar projects in the future.
This review shows that maintaining existing CSUD projects is very important for the consistent implementation of the country's 17 sustainable development goals, which its government has signed and made mandatory for current and future governments.
"Slovenska plaža naselje" is a sustainable and profitable entity that should be a model for future smart planning and development of the tourism sector in Montenegro.
