Montenegro is a country of diversity. Colorful, rich in people and customs. In everyday life, neighbors help each other, without asking who is who or where they come from, and have been doing so for decades. That is the Montenegro that gives us hope and of which we are proud.
But there is another picture.
One in which politics allows crimes to be relativized, history to be rewritten, and individual points of view to be proclaimed as the general narrative. Such an approach is not only unacceptable — it is dangerous. Attacking the truth always leads to division.
There are still witnesses among us who remember. Their memories are not just personal stories, but also part of historical facts confirmed by documents and testimonies. Therefore, Montenegro must send a clear message that it can never equate crime with heroism.
Without recognition, there is no reconciliation. Attempts to portray atrocities as heroism are not only an insult to the victims, but also a dangerous message to future generations. Without acknowledging mistakes and being willing to face the past, there is no true reconciliation. And without reconciliation, there is no progress.
Crime has a name and a face. Victims exist, perpetrators exist. And history must remain on the side of the truth.
The policy must be clear. Any glorification of crimes must be sanctioned by law, and the education system must teach young people to distinguish facts from myths. Institutions of culture and science must be a bulwark against revisionism and guardians of historical truth.
Free media have a special responsibility. Their mission is not to pander to myths and relativize facts, but to put the truth at the forefront, to educate and encourage critical thinking. Professional journalism is a pillar of democracy and the strongest protection against attempts to rewrite the past.
Germany showed the way. Society can only be built on the condemnation of Nazism and justice for the victims. Montenegro must not miss that lesson.
Revisionism is not an academic debate. It is a threat to Montenegro's European future and an attempt to return us to the divisions from which we have struggled to escape. This is not a fight against people who think differently, but a fight against attempts to portray crime as a virtue.
The biggest problem of our society is not only the lack of measures, but also the lack of will to implement them. We talk about the danger of revisionism, but everything remains just words. Laws are passed half-heartedly, they are not implemented consistently, and institutions are often silent when they should react. By doing so, the state sends the message that relativization and manipulation of the past are unpunished.
Even more dangerous is that the fight against revisionism is being turned into a weapon of political conflict. In Montenegro, we have witnessed how the label “revisionism” is used against those who disagree with us, while at the same time covering up crimes and lies when it suits one’s own side. This is not a fight for the truth, but rather the spread of falsehood. Such an approach does not lead to reconciliation, but rather deepens divisions.
The third problem is public fatigue. Citizens no longer believe the big words about “truth” and “justice” because they have been let down too many times. When generalities are constantly repeated, and concrete examples and actions are absent, people become indifferent. Indifference is the most dangerous ally of revisionism - because it opens the space for untruth to become normality.
Our response must be clear. The majority of citizens support the European path and this must be confirmed by laws and actions: by strengthening unity, developing the economy, improving social life. The knowledge and capacities of our young people should be used, wherever they are. The diaspora must not be seen only as an economic donor, but as a valuable resource of experts and a force that connects us with the world.
In the alliance for the future of Montenegro, free media, the diaspora and all citizens who believe in European values have an important place. This is the best response to the destructive attempts of the minority and the influences of those who do not care about Montenegro becoming part of the European Union.
It's time to choose Europe and the truth. Because anything else means going backwards. That Montenegro is eternal!
