The UNESCO World Heritage Committee today, without discussion, adopted, as announced by the Ministry of Culture, an affirmative decision related to the Natural and Cultural-Historical Area of Kotor.
"It is one of the most affirmative decisions of the Committee related to the area of Kotor, especially since 2003, when the area was removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger, where it had been until then due to the consequences of the devastating earthquake of 1979." statements from that department.
It is recalled that since then the Committee's warnings about the danger of sudden and uncontrolled urbanization and tourist pressure that threaten the preservation of exceptional universal values that are the basis for inscription on the World Heritage List begin.
"The decisions of the Committee were increasingly harsh, until the Decision from Istanbul in 2016, after which a series of consultations were made with UNESCO, which resulted in the adoption of the Action Plan for achieving this Decision by the Government of Montenegro," the statement says.
It is emphasized that from February 2017, when the Action Plan was adopted, until this year's Committee, activities were carried out that resulted in a Decision that welcomes the efforts of "the member states in many areas, including the drafting of the Draft PUP Kotor, the preparation of Amendments to the Law on Natural and the cultural and historical area of Kotor, initiation of revision of the Management Plan, revision of the HIA for the Area".
The Committee welcomes the state's decision to abandon the proposed cable car project from the Old Town to the San Giovanni fortress and the Glavati Prčanj tourist complex, in order to protect outstanding universal values.
"The state is encouraged to continue improving the impact assessment process, an HIA is requested for the tourist complex in Morinje and the bridge at Veriga, before any commitment by the state to implement these ideas. It is requested that the revised Management Plan include the recommendations of the Reactive Monitoring Mission from 2018 . year," says the Ministry's announcement.
The decision regarding the Durmitor National Park refers to the issues that were the subject of the November 2018 Advisory Mission.
"The decision confirms the findings of the Advisory Mission that visited Montenegro in November, and which calls for a series of activities that the state should undertake in the coming period in cooperation with UNESCO and advisory bodies," the statement said.
The World Heritage Committee is held every year with the aim of reviewing the state of preservation of natural and cultural assets inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and considering new nominations.
This year's Committee is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from June 30 to July 10.
The Committee has made important decisions, some of which refer to the termination of the status of "heritage in danger", for countries that have managed to prevent the loss of certain values. Certain properties are inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
