On Freedom Square in Nikšić today, from 10 a.m. to 18 p.m., an exhibition of documents "Consular Representation of Montenegro 1880-1914" was set up. The theme of the exhibition is the diplomatic missions of the Principality/Kingdom of Montenegro and the establishment of relations with certain countries of that era. According to Violeta Krivokapić, the head of the Ahiva department, the complete exhibition contains 39 panels, and 12 were shown in Nikšić.
"All 39 billboards will await stabilization with the coronavirus, and its presentation in full glory with a ceremonial opening. The most influential countries from the beginning of the principality to the First World War are shown. These are Italy, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Turkey, Great Britain, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Monaco, Canada. At that time, 42 consular missions were detected in the world," said Krivokapić.
The author of the exhibition is Vukota Vukotić, MA, while Jelena Nikolić worked on its preparation and realization, and Srđan Pejović provided professional assistance.
"The exhibition presents archival material from the fund of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is being published for the first time in our professional and lay public. The previous Montenegrin historiography did not have an affinity for dealing with this important topic, so with this scientific and popular form, attention is drawn to the isolated material", stated the organizers.
As they pointed out, the displayed material in an explicit way shows the position of Montenegro at the time and its international reputation, which "far exceeded its and regional borders".
"Through the institution of the honorary consul, Montenegro at that time developed lively ties with numerous countries, but also with significant individuals who represented its economic and other interests in those countries," they pointed out.
The organizer of the exhibition is the State Archives of Montenegro - Archives Department Nikšić in cooperation with the Municipality of Nikšić and the Nikšić Theater.
