The roof of the Olympic Stadium in Munich now bears the title "Historical Symbol of Engineering Construction Art in Germany".
"Completed for the Olympic Games in 1972, the tent-shaped roof still plays an important role in construction today. The construction is characterized by the fact that it used state-of-the-art techniques, largely developed just for it," said the German Chamber of Engineering.
Since 2007, the chamber has been awarding the title to historically significant buildings throughout Germany. The buildings must be at least half a century old.
Bavarian Construction Minister Christian Bernreiter was unable to attend Friday's ceremony, but says he admires the roof "as a steel construction and welding engineer."
"Together with the Olympic Park, it gives the city of Munich a unique face and has great value for citizens," said Bernreiter.
"Every year, tourists from all over the world come to see this characteristic place. That the unique engineering architecture is now given special respect is absolutely deserved."
