Promotion of the book "Pirate Republic of Ulcinj" by the author Mustafe Canke, will be held today at 19 pm, in the hall of the Academy of Knowledge in Budva, organized by the Budva National Library.
Writers will talk about the book of journalist and publicist Mustafa Canka: Miraš Martinović i Đorđe Gregović, as well as the author himself, and the program will be moderated Stanka Stanojević.
"In Europe, until the 18th century, piracy was a vocation like any other; more or less every man could engage in this occupation as long as it did not damage his reputation... The best places for pirates were mostly cities on the edge of a large country. Such was the "Pirate Republic of Ulcinj" during two of the three centuries of living in the Ottoman Empire, that small state within a state, a city of privileged status, with a solid military organization, whose rebellious and powerful pirates managed to be their own masters", it is stated, among other things, in the introduction of the book, on the pages of which the author writes an interesting story about the world of fearless pirates from Ulcinj.
Canka was born in 1969. He lives and works in Ulcinj, where he completed primary and secondary school. He graduated from the Faculty of Tourism and Foreign Trade in Dubrovnik. Founder and editor-in-chief of Portal Ul-info, member of the editorial staff of the independent Podgorica weekly "Monitor". He has been a correspondent for German media, Deutsche Welle and WDR from Montenegro for many years. Member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Professional Journalists of Montenegro and the Media Institute of Montenegro. He is the author of the books "City - comments" (2008), "Ulcinj in the Ottoman Empire" (2012) and "Intercultural views - Ulcinj and Bar" (2020). All books are published bilingually (in Montenegrin and Albanian). The most famous media in the French language that follows the events in the southeast of Europe, Courrier des Balkans, declared him one of the 13 heroes of the Balkans for 2021.
