A letter from composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from 1783 was sold at an online auction to a private European bidder for 440.000 euros.
The sale price of the letter exceeded by more than four times the starting price of 100.000 euros, announced the auction house International Autograph Auctions Europe, based in Malaga in southern Spain.
The auction house states that there was great interest in the USA and Asia.
A letter from the Austrian composer to French publisher Jean-Georges Sieber, written in German, was actually thought to be lost, the auction house said. It was later found in the family archives.

Also on sale was John Lennon's eight-page letter addressed to Eric Clapton from 1971, in which he proposes to form a new "super band". However, the letter was not sold.
"There was interest, but it wasn't enough to make an offer," said a spokesperson for the auction house.
The initial price of the letter was between 80.000 and 100.000 euros, Hina agency reports.
