The German police announced this evening that they detained seven Serbian fans involved in a fight with the English in Gelsenkirchen, just before the start of the match at the European Football Championship.
All of them were detained after the incident that happened on the terrace of a restaurant in the city, the unnamed police spokesman said, adding that a report was filed for assault and injuries.
"The reasons for what happened are still unclear," the spokesman added, stating that the police had to separate the two groups.
The German daily Bild carried photos showing the fight on the terrace of the restaurant, in particular the throwing of chairs.
An AFP journalist noticed broken glass on the terrace after the incidents and saw a group of Serbian fans escorted by the police to the metro station.
German police said earlier that they had deployed additional forces in fear of incidents.
