In the last six matches at the European championships, Turkey registered only one victory. It was eight years ago in France, when the selection from the Bosphorus defeated the Czech Republic 2:0 with goals from Jilmaz and Tufan, and ended the previous Euro with all three defeats and one scored goal.
In the meantime, Turkey missed the World Cup in Qatar, and played the qualifications for the European Championship flawlessly and qualified for Germany from the first position, where, according to experts, it could be a positive surprise. And whether it will really be like that will be shown by today's duel (15 p.m.) against the debutant in major competitions - Georgia.
Turkey will have great support from fans in Germany, who will definitely be more numerous than the rivals' fans at the "Signal Iduna Park" in Dortmund.
- We want to make our fans proud, to play with passion and courage. We have a team made up of young, talented players and more experienced ones, who are role models. We have a chance - said the coach of Turkey Vincenzo Montela.
Montela is facing injured players in the last line, the question is which team will perform in the premier match.
- Several players are injured, but we have to have confidence in the guys who will play. In the last two tournaments, we did not pass the group stage, so we have to win and win points from the beginning - said the former Italian footballer.
And Georgia is ready for a big debut. It is about another selection that used the passage through the League of Nations to qualify for the European Championship.
- Turkey is an excellent team. It has outstanding players, who play in big clubs. It will be difficult for us. But I can only say one thing - it will be difficult for Turkey as well - said Georgia coach Vili Sanjol.
Rivals in the group are Portugal and the Czech Republic.
- Turkey has worked exceptionally well in the past few years. There are several new, young, talented players. The Czech Republic has participated in numerous tournaments throughout its history, and Portugal is a European power. We came to this tournament unnoticed. But what is certain is that we will not give up, we will do our best in all matches - said Sanjol.
Probable lineups - Turkey (4-2-3-1): Gunok - Ajhal, Demiral, Bardakci, Kadioglu - Ozcan, Calhanoglu - Guler, Yildiz, Akturkoglu - Yilmaz.
Georgia (3-5-2): Mamardashvili - Kvirkvelia, Kashia, Dvali - Kakabadze, Kiteishvili, Kochorashvili, Shengelija, Chakvetadze - Kvaracheliya, Mikautadze.
