UEFA suspended Merih Demiral for two matches, German Bild reported.
The Turkish national team reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 by beating Austria (2:1) thanks to Demiral, the scorer of both goals after corner kicks.
Al Ahli's defender, however, celebrated his team's passage to the quarter-finals with the gesture used by the "gray wolves", which is strictly prohibited in Austria.
UEFA launched an investigation into the episode, and German Interior Minister Nancy Feser was explicit:
"Symbols of Turkish right-wing extremists have no place in our stadiums. Using Euro 2024 as a platform for racism is unacceptable!"
The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Turkish ambassador in Berlin because of the scandal, German media reported. But Turkey also responded by inviting the German ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey.
