On Friday, the Podgorica Parliament will urgently consider the initiative of Mayor Ivan Vuković to erect a monument to Josip Broz Tito in Podgorica.
The initiative foresees that the monument will be completed already during the next year.
And while Vuković believes that Tito was a great admirer and protector of Montenegro, in the opposition ranks, Broz is perceived differently.
The Democratic Front (DF) believes that Tito is responsible for the bombing of Podgorica and the death of a large number of Montenegrin citizens. On the other hand, the Democrats say that at first they naively believed that it was a sincere initiative, but now they are of the opinion that it is just another intention of the Democratic Party SocialiDPS to play on divisions among the citizens of Montenegro.
Josip Broz Tito was a great admirer of Montenegro and its history, always ready to help it and give recognition for its exploits - it is stated in the explanation of the mayor of Podgorica, Ivan Vuković, with which he asked the city parliament to urgently consider at the session scheduled for Friday the decision to erect a monument to the greatest son of the Yugoslav peoples in Podgorica, the city that once bore the marshal's name.
"He was the first, in our country and in the world, who said that in the anti-fascist war, on July 13, 1941, Montenegro ignited the spark of European resistance to that scourge and, generally speaking, gave the other nations of Yugoslavia an incentive to fight and thus laid foundations for the new brotherhood of the people of Yugoslavia."
In the opposition ranks, they see the opposite of this idea.
DF says that they are strictly against erecting a monument in Podgorica to the man who, as they say, directly ordered the bombing of Podgorica at the end of World War II.
"It is a political issue that is currently being imposed, we don't know for what reasons, and what is important now is that such a person, whose rule is in complete contrast to today's European democracy, understandings and aspirations that Montenegro is moving towards the EU. We we are completely against the fact that such a person who is agreeable to a large number of Montenegrins, that we are raising a monument to such a person today", said Miodrag Bešović, DF councilor.
The strongest opposition party in Podgorica - Democratic Montenegro initially supported this idea, because, as they say, they believed that it was a sincere initiative. However, now they believe that behind everything is hidden another political game of DPS on the card of division in Montenegro.
"We, as young people primarily, will not return to their stories, and we will not play Chetniks and partisans in Montenegro in 2018 in the 21st century. I can already announce that the councilors of Democratic Montenegro in the Assembly of the Capital City will not attend , any session, at which decisions will be made on initiatives aimed at discouraging the citizens of Montenegro," said Duško Stijepović from Democratic Montenegro.
And Vuković announced in the explanation of the proposal that Tito did everything to ensure that the national rights of Montenegrins are respected equally with the national rights of other peoples, and that Montenegrin culture is given an equal relationship with all others.
"By erecting the monument to Josip Broz Tito, the memories of a distinguished personality, a revolutionary, a fighter against fascism, one of the greatest world statesmen of the XNUMXth century, whose work is of international importance and represents a contribution to the fight for peace, understanding and cooperation of the peoples of the world, are permanently preserved." , said Vuković.
It is planned that the memorial to Tito will be erected in the capital already during the next year.
