Members of the European Parliament (EP) adopted today the Resolution on Montenegro for the past year.

471 deputies voted for the report on Montenegro, 98 were against, and 41 abstained.

EP rapporteur for Montenegro, Charles Tanok, said during yesterday's debate on the Resolution in the EP, that the fight against organized crime remains one of the priorities.

He praised the progress made and said he was concerned about Russia's influence.

EP MP Eduard Kukan, in today's announcement regarding the vote in the EP, congratulated Montenegro on its stable path towards the European Union (EU).

"With the huge support of its population, it is important that Montenegro focuses on the accession process and does not lose momentum. "Further work is needed in reforms in the area of the rule of law, mainly in the judiciary, the fight against corruption and organized crime, but also in improving the media situation in the country," said Kukan.

Unfortunately, as he said, progress is in the shadow of the parliament boycott. "I hope that the usual legislative work will be resumed soon".

"Montenegro went through a turbulent election year. Proper investigations are important to shed light on the events of October last year. This must be done in accordance with the laws of Montenegro and international standards. The recommendations of the OSCE related to the implementation of the elections should be taken seriously," said Kukan.

According to him, Montenegro is a positive force in the regional system in the Western Balkans and he hopes, he added, that it will continue to play a constructive role.

"As we see Russia's growing appetite in the region, I hope that Montenegro will continue to follow its geopolitical orientation towards Euro-Atlantic structures and that we will soon welcome it as a new NATO member," concluded Kukan.
