Gray hair, wrinkles and physical ailments that normally appear in old age could be reversible, according to scientists.
A team of scientists has discovered how a new gene therapy has an incredible effect on rejuvenating mice.
After six weeks of therapy, the mice looked younger, had straighter spines and better cardiovascular health. They lived 30 percent longer and recovered faster from injuries.
"Our research has shown that aging does not have to be a one-way street. With careful modulations, aging could be reversed and reversed," said Juan Carlos Belmonte, who led the study at the Salk Institute in California.
The discovery of a new gene therapy is not yet available for use in humans. Clinical studies will be carried out for decades, but the discovery of this therapy in the treatment of aging and the various conditions that come with it is significant.
Scientists want to prove that aging is not a process of physical exhaustion during life, but that it is the result of genetic changes that cause the body to age. Aging cannot be stopped nor will people be immortal, but it will be possible to slow down the internal genetic clock that causes us to age.
This is also the first time that cell reprogramming therapy has been successfully carried out in animals and their reversal. The chemicals used in the therapy could, through injections or creams, be used to rejuvenate bones, muscles and skin, the Guardian writes.
