If you suffer from migraines, then you know that the consequences of the pain, such as loss of vision, sensitivity to light and vomiting, can disable you from functioning for up to 72 hours.
Here are ten tips that can help you:
1. Spot the onset of a migraine in time
"Many people don't realize they're about to have a migraine attack until they're already in the advanced stages of the attack, so they take painkillers too late," says Dr. Sue Lipscomb. She advises keeping a journal of your feelings, symptoms, and even your need for certain foods on the day you had a migraine attack, which can help you predict future migraines.
2. Know your triggers
Stress, dehydration, skipping meals, certain foods and hormonal changes are all aspects that can trigger a migraine.
3. Stick to a specific sleep routine
Many migraines and headaches can be triggered by sudden changes in your sleep patterns – too much sleep can be just as bad for your health as too little. Stick to a routine as much as possible, including on weekends.
4. Always keep pain relievers on hand
"Keep in mind that most migraine and headache medications have a limit on how much you can take at one time. If your pain doesn't go away after a few days, talk to your pharmacist or doctor," advises Lipscomb.
5. Exercise regularly
Try to exercise at least three to four times a week for 30 minutes.
6. Drink lots of water and avoid too much caffeine
It is recommended that you drink two liters of water a day and avoid drinks with a high percentage of caffeine, such as coffee, tea and Coca-Cola.
7. Limit alcohol consumption and leave cigarettes
"This may sound too obvious, but there is often a link between smoking, alcohol, migraines and terrible headaches," the doctor warned.
8. Try acupuncture
Acupuncture is highly preferred as a form of treatment for migraines. Before going to someone, ask if they have good recommendations in what they do.
9. Avoid food additives and chemicals that can trigger migraines
This includes things like tyramine, an ingredient found naturally in aged cheese, red wine and alcohol.
10. Take time for yourself if you feel stressed
Go for a long walk, pamper yourself, take a yoga or meditation class - do things that relax you!
