When he finally knocked down the "eternal" heavyweight champion Vladimir Klitschko last year, the world was his.
In an instant, the King of Gypsies became a global star, a fighter who succeeded in the impossible - he knocked down the unbeatable Ukrainian, ended the boring dominance of the Klitschko family and brought a breath of fresh air to a sport that had become damn predictable.
Or so it seemed. The boxing world was anxiously waiting for the rematch. That's how it goes in boxing. Such is the fate of whoever succeeds in knocking down a champion and it was interesting to see if Tyson Fury was a star for a day or if a new age in boxing had truly arrived.
However, Fury failed to prove anything and what followed was painful to watch, even more painful to read.
First, the Briton canceled the first agreed fight with Klitschko due to an alleged injury, only for the second postponement to surface all the problems that became the main topic of tabloids around the world.
Simply, the fame that arrived overnight was too much for the crazy Brit.
“I'm manically depressed. I hope someone kills me before I get a hand on myself. I was pushed to the edge. The psychiatrist told me that I have a severe form of bipolar disorder. And all because of the great shit I went through in boxing".
"If I wasn't a Christian, I would have taken my own life in the same second. Every day I hope to die. I know it's an ugly thing to say when you have a beautiful family, but I just don't want to live. That's what boxing did to me," Fury confessed in a recent interview with "Rolling Stone".
Klitschko has already started looking for a new opponent and it will probably be Fury's countryman Anthony Joshua, because everyone has given up on the struggling champion.
But according to the latest information coming from the Island, it may not be impossible for us to once again see the match that marked the world of boxing in recent years.
Peter Fury, Tyson's uncle and trainer, told the BBC that the world champion is better, that he is seriously thinking about returning to training and that he expects him back in the gym in March or April.
"I have no doubt that Tyson will continue his career," said Peter Fury.
After becoming the world champion in November of last year, Fury unified the titles in the WBA, IBF and WBO version, but after abandoning the match with Vyacheslav Glazkov, he was stripped of the IBF belt.
Peter Fury believes that it is time that all other challengers have the right to fight for the two remaining titles, and that the champion must give them up until he is able to dedicate himself to boxing and, as soon as he returns to the ring, he has the opportunity to return belts.
"As long as Tyson is not fit to fight for health reasons, those titles should be vacant. Let people fight for them. However, I believe that Tyson should also be given a chance when he returns to boxing, and I am convinced that he will, to get the opportunity to fight for world championship titles".
"It's no secret that Tyson is seriously ill, he has terrible mental problems, but I appeal to all those responsible not to write him off. Other famous athletes also fell to the bottom at some point in their careers, so they came back," concludes Peter Fury.
WBA president Hilberto Mendoza told "Sportvik" that Fury deserves a chance to overcome this situation.
"Our main concern is to monitor what is happening with the belt and to keep an eye on the whole situation around it. We decided to help Tyson. We will send him our medical advisors and doctors to do everything to bring Tyson back to the living."
"However, it is difficult for me to talk about the future at the moment. I don't know if Tyson will be able to fight for the title, it's hard to say because the matter is not simple. In the end, he admitted that he had taken cocaine, and it is our policy to have zero tolerance for all drugs. That could be a big problem, because we want to keep boxing clean," Mendoza said.
