"Redhead" by Orhan Pamuk in bookstores

Turkish author Orhan Pamuk's latest book, The Red-Haired Woman, hit bookstores on Tuesday. This is the 10th novel of the Turkish Nobel laureate.

The book "The Red-Haired Woman" was published by Yapi Kredi Publishing and is currently only available in Turkish. The action takes place in the mid-1980s in Istanbul, the author's favorite period.

The story follows the well digger Mahmut and his apprentice as they search for water in the bare ground, using an ancient method for digging new wells.

"This is a story about their grueling physical struggle, but at the same time it is also an exploration of...ideas about fathers and sons, authoritarianism and individuality, state and freedom, reading and seeing," according to Pamuk's website.

There the novel is described as "at one moment a realistic text that investigates a murder that happened 30 years ago, near Istanbul, and at another an imagined investigation of the literary foundations of civilization, comparing the two foundational myths of the West and the East, Sophocles' Oedipus the King (the story of parricide ) and the story of Rustem and Suhrab (the story of killing their children)".

With its 204 pages, "The Red-Haired Woman" belongs to Pamuk's shorter novels.
