Customs officers seized around 33 kilograms of cocaine in the Port of Bar yesterday.
The drug was found in a container full of coffee sacks delivered from Brazil, the institution announced.
Investigators have said unofficially that they suspect a much larger shipment of drugs was unloaded somewhere on the road between Brazil and Montenegro.
"Cocaine was found on top of coffee sacks. It was not hidden, which is unusual... Nevertheless, the investigation will determine all the details and whether the cargo worth around 1.500.000 euros was intended for someone from Montenegro," said the source of "Vijesti" ".
The customs and police administrations announced that the criminal technician of the Bar Security Center performed a preliminary chemical analysis and weight measurement, which determined that it was cocaine with a gross weight of 33,438 kilograms.
"During the storage of containers with coffee, which were delivered to the Port of Bar on November 25, 2015 by the ship 'TONGAN II, customs officers, on the basis of port documentation and risk analysis, proceeded to inspect a certain number of containers that arrived from South America. The control of the containers determined that the customs markings of one container are damaged, but that it is an identical number of the seal that is stated on the bill of lading," the announcement states.
After opening the container, they explain, it was noticed that there was a bag on top, which in terms of color and shape did not match the declared goods.
"By opening the bag, the customs officials found goods whose appearance and hardness correspond to the usual packages of smuggled narcotics. It is about 33 kg of a white substance that is reasonably suspected to be the psychostimulant drug cocaine," the announcement reads.
They also wrote that police officers are taking further measures in order to identify persons who smuggled drugs.
In June 2014, customs officers seized 253 kilograms of cocaine in the Port of Bar.
The Prosecutor's Office recently officially announced that the investigation established that no Montenegrin citizen was involved in that business.
The European Commission, however, criticized the authorities, writing in the Progress Report that the network that organized the drug trade was not discovered during the investigation.
Customs officials discovered the white powder before the container was to be transferred by truck to the Albanian company "Rrapaj kornere".
On April 25, 2014, three containers with fruit and cocaine left Ecuador by ship for Europe. Based on data available on specialized internet sites, "Vijesti" obtained the data that the container with cargo was filled in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, and that it sailed from the terminal there on the deck of the ship "Bogor".
The ship arrived at the terminal in the Spanish port of Malaga on May 15, where the container was unloaded, which was loaded onto the ship "Hamonia Antofagasta" the next day, after which it arrived at the terminal in Malta three days later.
From May 19 to 29, that refrigerated container was in Malta (Marsaxlock), and on May 29, the German ship "York Valiant" loaded it and connected it to Bar, where it arrived on May 31.
