Croatian writer Miljenko Jergović is the winner of the Njegoš Award for the novel "Sex", published in 2013 in Zagreb.
"The international jury discussed 17 proposals nominated by selectors from BiH, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro. In addition to Jergović, David Albahari and Dimitar Baševski entered the shortlist", the Ministry of Culture announced.
The decision on the winner of the Njegoš Award was made by a jury made up of prominent writers and scientists from seven countries of the region: academician Zdenko Lešić (BiH), prof. dr Svetlozar Igov (Bulgaria), academician Katica Ćulavkova (Macedonia), prof. Dr. Aleš Debeljak (Slovenia), prof. Filip David (Serbia), academician Sreten Perović (Montenegro) and President Vlaho Bogišić (Croatia).
According to the Jury, Jergović is one of the most widely read and media-representative writers "present in these areas, important for our culture and spirituality, for key issues of cultural and national and linguistic identities, for the concept of gender, for the concept of the other and our alter ego, for South Slavic dramatic conflicts of fate and tragedy".
"His opus is our opus from the end of the XNUMXth century, the opus of a disintegration that naturally strives towards spiritual reintegration and catharsis. Jergović's family is a catharsis of belonging through its problematization, through love, through language and through memory and narration. That's why his novel "Gender" deconstructs the concept of national identity and confronts polyphonic identities in the South Slavic areas," the explanation says.
The Njegoš award will be presented to Jergović by the President of Montenegro, Filip Vujanović.
