Pakistan's Supreme Court has acquitted the Christian woman Asia Bibi, sentenced to death for blasphemy, whose case sparked outrage abroad and violence in Pakistan.
"She has been acquitted of all charges," said judge Saqib Nisar, adding that Bibi should be released from prison "immediately".
Bibi, a mother of five, was sentenced to death in 2010 after an argument with a Muslim over a glass of water.
The case also took on an international dimension, attracting the attention of Popes Benedict XVI and Francis.
In 2015, one of Asia Bibi's daughters met with Pope Francis.
The court's decision could cause outrage among religious fundamentalists in Pakistan who have long called for Bibi's execution.
Last week, radical Islamists threatened the judges if they made a decision in favor of the convicted woman.
Islamabad is under heightened security today, with roadblocks near neighborhoods where judges and the diplomatic corps live.
