Due to the excessive use of alcohol in 2016, more than three million people died, which means that for every 20 deaths in the world, one was related to the harmful effects of alcohol, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
As stated in the WHO statement, in more than three quarters of the total number of deaths caused by it, there were men, reports Tanjug.
In addition, it was emphasized that despite evidence of health risks, forecasts indicate that global alcohol consumption will increase even more in the next ten years.
"It is time to take steps to prevent a serious threat to the development of a healthy society. Too many people and their families and communities suffer from the consequences of alcohol abuse," WHO Director-General Teodoros Adanom Gebrehesus said in the report.
The report is titled "Global Report on the Status of Alcohol and Health 2018".
Globally, it is estimated that around 237 million men and 46 million women suffer from alcoholism.
The highest number of these cases was recorded in Europe and America, and disorders caused by alcohol consumption are more common in more developed countries.
