Anthony Joshua has warned Alexander Povetkin that he will take a "proper beating" even if he manages to avoid a knockout on September 22.
WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, in an interview with Tok Sport, told the Russian boxer that he expects to get beaten at Wembley, reports Sport Club.
Before the threats were uttered, Joshua talked about the age difference between him and Povjetkin. Joshua has 28, and Povetkin 11 more.
"Your body can't function like it does when you're 21, that's clear. But, from the fight with Klitschko, who was 41 at the time, I learned that the last thing the body loses strength with age. I'm glad that I went through everything with Klitschko because I have another tough match waiting for me. I think that fight showed me what to do in certain situations," Joshua said.
"At this level, you can't think that every punch you land on your opponent's chin is going to be a knockout. These are strong guys, they're brave and they have something to fight for. It's about breaking your opponent round after round. If it's enough, he goes down 100 percent, if not at least he took a fair beating. Povetkin may be 39 years old, but when he leaves the ring he'll feel like he's 69. He goes down between the sixth and eighth rounds, for sure," said the champion.
Joshua and Povetkin will enter the ring on September 22 at Wembley.
