Sport is an area in which even small Montenegro with limited financial resources can achieve fantastic results and compete with important European and world teams, said the president of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee (COC), Dušan Simonović.
He said that he is encouraged by professional work and reliance on domestic forces, citing the example of trophy specialists Dragan Adžić, Ranko Perović and Vladmir Gojković.
Simonović told the MINA agency that he was happy with the work with the younger categories and the good results of the younger selections, stating that they are the guarantor of the bright future of Montenegrin sports.
"We pay a lot of attention to young athletes, they are the future of Montenegrin sports. In the middle of the year, the Youth Olympic Games in China are on the program and we already have two representatives with a guaranteed norm. I hope one or two more will make the cut. It is an interesting competition for our young athletes and an opportunity to prove ourselves once again on the big stage," said Simonović.
He said that the Winter Olympics are the first major competition and that Montenegro will have its representative in Sochi as well.
Simonović believes that the public in Montenegro can expect a lot of joy from athletes in 2014 as well.
"In collective sports, there are, traditionally, water polo and handball, basketball with great expectations and possibilities, revivals of volleyball in the club, and soon I believe also at the representative level. "Football, as the most popular and watched sport, is the best example that even small Montenegro, with limited resources and conditions, managed to fight with a much stronger team," Simonović said.
According to him, a lot is expected from athletes, judokas, tennis players and sailors in the individual competition.
He said that the COK with 300, which it received from the budget, can hardly comply with all that is required of the national committee.
"There will probably be better years. "It is possible that this year was still difficult and that after that we will be able to count on a bigger budget," Simonović said.
