Budo Simonović, a journalist from Podgorica, told "Vijesta" that the former police officer and Spu prison Brajuško Brajušković warned him that the former editor of "Dana", Duško Jovanović, who was later killed in front of the newsroom, would be beaten.
He said that a lot of anonymous messages about monitoring, eavesdropping and recording of journalists were arriving at the "Politika" office in Podgorica at the time...
"And then Brajuško warned us. As that warning came directly from the police and we took it more seriously. He spoke to us, and we conveyed it to our colleagues, we also conveyed it to Dragan Bećirović and Duško Jovanović. I know what he told me at the time, but I had no other, more immediate information," Simonović said.
Simonović said that Brajušković was not allowed to come to their office at that time, but that they were seeing each other almost illegally.
"I remember one time Pura Miranović, me and another colleague went to see him, where he lives. It was a somewhat illegal visit, because we didn't want to get him in trouble either, and we didn't care to reveal the source. I am a great friend of his brother and I think that was one of the reasons why he warned".
"It's unfortunate that it took 20 years for everything that happened to happen, and now we're all dealing with it. I am particularly sorry, because a group of journalists warned about all this on several occasions. No one mentions the attack on Rad Vukićević, who was beaten in broad daylight, as well as other colleagues who were beaten. It is unfortunate that no one treated it in the right way then, and that it is being started now. But, well, better late than never," he said.
He added that the biggest problem is that there is no material evidence and that leaves the possibility of denial.
Simonović said that, despite this, it is ridiculous that the prosecution is asking Brajušković for a written order to beat him.
"When someone asks you if you have written evidence that someone ordered you to be beaten, it's so funny and ugly, it's unbelievable... You need to get interested in another way and see what who said and how who did , because his accusations are quite convincing and the people who are denying him now, would have to come up with strong arguments", he said.
