The non-governmental organizations LGBT Forum Progres and LGBTIQ Socijalni Centar strongly condemned, as they say, the shameful and cowardly attack on "Vijesti" journalist Olivera Lakić and said that the attack on journalists and the media is an attack on the very foundations of a free and democratic society and that under no circumstances should can be tolerated.

"Our society and state welcomed May 9 - the Day of Victory over Fascism - defeated by the actions of fascist ideas of the modern age, which every day strive to threaten the very core of democracy - freedom of thought, freedom of speech, human rights... Free and independent media are the supporting pillar of every democratic society and as such must be protected from persecution, harassment and pressure of any kind," said the LGBT Forum Progres and the LGBTIQ Social Center.

They point out that the attack on Lakić only showed that Montenegro is far from a country where basic rights and freedoms are respected, and that we have a long way to go before we can live without fear, violence and hatred.

"We appeal to all competent institutions to do their work efficiently and independently, so that the perpetrators of this heinous attack are held accountable before the law. We tell all journalists to persevere in their efforts and uncompromisingly defend media freedom, because that is the only way to a democratic and free society", concludes the announcement of the two organizations.
