The UN Security Council condemned the Syrian authorities for attacks on civilians and widespread violations of human rights in that country, which has been rocked by anti-regime protests for months.
After three months of silence regarding the escalation of violence in Syria, the Council adopted a presidential statement condemning President Bashar al-Assad's crackdown on anti-government protesters.
The discussion in the Security Council was initiated by the strong military action that the Syrian army carried out over the weekend in the central city of Hama, and several other Syrian cities that are the scene of protests.
140 people were killed, 100 of them in Hama itself.
