Two civilians were killed and more were wounded today in Syria, at demonstrations held across the country against President Bashar al-Assad, human rights activists said.
"One young man was killed and several others were injured when the police opened fire on protesters who had gathered in Latakia" (in the west of the country), the head of the Syrian Organization for the Protection of Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman, told Agence France-Presse.
According to the chief representative of the Syrian League for Human Rights, Abdel Karim Ruhuai, a young man was also killed during today's demonstrations in the city of Dera in the south of the country.
France Press reports that the police have been deployed in the Dera area and that those carrying mobile phones and photo equipment, as well as men under the age of 50, are prohibited from entering mosques.
Rahman and Ruhuaji said that demonstrations were also held today in Damascus, Homs, Douma, and Marat al Naman.
Bashar al-Assad has been in power since 2000, and mass protests against his regime, in which more than a thousand people have died so far, have been going on since March 15.
