Silver for Furtula, Marija only eighth

Montenegrin athletics has a new pearl - seven days before his 19th birthday, Danijel Furtula became the junior vice-champion of Europe in the discus throw!

The staunch Mojkovcan already set a personal record (1) in the 61,21st series and equaled the result from Bar less than two months ago (60,94). But the real thrills were yet to follow - Furtula's second shot was as long as 63,43, thus taking first place.

Unfortunately, the celebration was short-lived, as the Austrian Lukas Weischeidinger opened the 3rd series with a personal record of 63,83 and seized the lead. Furtula fouled the following throws, and in the last attempt he threw the disc very far. The excitement was at its peak for a few seconds, before the scoreboard read 63,54.

An indescribable celebration of Weisscheidinger began, but Furtula had no reason to grieve either. On the contrary... He showed that he too must be taken seriously.

The bronze went to the best of the qualifiers, the German Benedikt Štinen, who threw up to 62,33 meters.

With phenomenal success, Furtula "pulled out" his colleague from the national team, Marija Vuković, who took only 8th place in the high jump with 181 centimeters. The world champion from Moncton, Canada, where exactly one year ago she won gold with a jump of 191 centimeters, only jumped 172 and 181 from the first shot. At 177, she broke the bar once, and at 185 all three times.

The first place went to the Russian Maria Kučina, who jumped 195 centimeters. Second with 191 was Lithuania's Airine Palšite, who was also silver in Moncton with two centimeters less height. German Nadja Kampschulte (188) grabbed the bronze.

Darko Pešić won 13th place in the decathlon. After ten disciplines, he won 7.062 points, which is five less than the personal and Montenegrin record. Pešić set two Montenegrin junior records, in the 110-meter hurdles race (15,03) and in the pole vault (3,60).

Pešić won 110th place in the 11-meter race, and 18th place in the pole vault.

He was fifth in the 1.500-meter race (4:39,20), he achieved the same ranking in the discus throw (45,31), while he won ninth place in the javelin throw (53,81).

The new European champion is the Frenchman Kevin Mayer with 8.124 points, who set a new European championship record with that result. The silver medal went to the German Matias Brugger (7.853), and the bronze to his compatriot Johannes Hock (7.806).
