GA: It is worrying that the plea agreement is being applied to members of criminal groups

The plea agreement proved justified, but it is worrying that this institute is also applied to members of organized criminal groups, said the Citizens' Alliance (GA).

The coordinator of the rule of law program in GA, Zoran Vujičić, said that the plea agreement proved justified, especially when the prosecutors are not completely sure that they will be able to prove the defendant's guilt in the court proceedings with the collected evidence.

He pointed out that the lengthy court proceedings that eventually resulted in acquittals (the case of Šarić and Kalić) and large compensations directed the prosecutors, consciously or unconsciously, more towards that institute to reach final verdicts relatively quickly and to the possibility of using those cases in other court proceedings.

"However, it is worrisome that this institute is also applied to members of organized criminal groups, for whom this type of punishment is an incentive for criminal activities," said Vujičić to the MINA agency.

According to him, such a punitive policy had an indirect effect on the worsening of the security situation from year to year.

Vujičić stated that such a situation is not only a product of the work of prosecutors' offices or courts, but also of the National Security Agency (ANB).

"The prime minister who comes from the security sector and who is well acquainted with human resources within the ANB would have to refresh the Agency personally because there are obvious failures in the assessments of the situation in the country," Vujičić added.

As he added, he encourages that in the coming period, all state authorities will cooperate more quickly and better with the aim of improving the situation in that area.

"Although they should do it regardless of this situation," Vujičić pointed out.
